The distributive spirit of the bonobos

bonobo.jpg

The bonobos (Bread paniscus) or dwarf chimpanzees are one of two species that compose the genre of the chimpanzees. Since well we know, they are our most nearby relatives, and they share a multitude of features similar to ours. The primatología has studied them thoroughly, and the conclusion of a recent study has been interesting with regard to his social behavior.

Brian Hare of the University Duke and Suzy Kwetuenda of Lola Ya Bonobo, a center of care of bonobos orphans in the Republic Democráctica of the Congo have studied the distributive behavior of the bonobos, in an experiment that turns out to be revealing regarding the same one and that reveals to the altruistic character of the same one.

I will do and Kwetuenda put a hungry bonobo in a quarter with meal. To a side of this quarter there was an empty room, while to another side there was another alone bonobo and without meal, and the simian could see towards both quarters across a glass. Two investigators studied the behavior and the decisions of the bonobo with meal, to see if he preferred to be an egoist and eat his meal alone, or to distribute it with his partner of the room of nearby.

Of surprising form, the chimpanzee opened the door and shared his food with his partner, in a behavior that the investigators consider to be an altruistic attitude of his part.

The investigation plans testear the behavior to major scale and inside a social context, but at least it is known that at individual level these animals have a tendency to leave the egoism aside. Is it this attitude inherent also in us?

The Life in the Nebula of Orión

llori_orion_hst_c14.jpg

Orión, the most beautiful and emblematic between the nebulas, is the whole celebrity between us. As regards her it does a pair of days the Telescope Herschel has provided to us the most interesting information that allows us to compare it with a luck of stellar original broth, spread at a few light years of our planet.

Specifically, the Herschel has spread an espectrografía in which there separates the trace of light expressed by the nebula in different bogeys. The astronomers have analyzed it thoroughly, coming to the conclusion that Orión has all the necessary ingredients to lodge life.

Below we can appreciate the image more graphically (click in her to extend), where the peaks represent the presence of the stated molecule. This way, methanol, water, sulphuric dioxide and other molecules are present in Orión, a little curious súmamente in the discussion on the life in the space.

The information was gathered by Herschel using his Hi-fi instrument, which uses a new skill that does espectroscopía thinner, which one hopes that it should facilitate the best comprehension of the chemistry of the space.

Archaeology of the Bible: In search of Neta'im

44297-holy_bible.jpg

“They were potters and they were living in Neta'im and Gederah; they were residing there with the king, working to his service.”

I start by quoting to the Ancient Testament, in one of his most enigmatic versículos for the historical archaeology specializing in the Bible. There one mentions to two cities, Neta'im and Gederah. The first one of them is the one that we are interested in, since only it is mentioned in this versículo along the whole Old Testament, and this fleeting mention has been enough to Neta'im so that the archaeologists were breaking the head trying to locate his traces.

In yesterday, in an excellent archaeological find for the history of the Christianity, Israeli investigators directed by Gershon Galil, teacher of Biblical studies of the University of Haifa in Israel, have confirmed the location of the city of Neta'im. It is a question of the city Kirbet Qeiyafa, establishment that previously had collaborated the Biblical city Sha'arayim, but that now has corroborated his definitive relation with Neta'im.

The key for it there have been exactly the ceramios mentioned in the Biblical appointment. Analyses of ceramic fragments and of holes where olives were burned have confirmed a dating of 1.000 years B.C. for the place, epoch in which King David was reigning.

“The Neta'im inhabitants were afareros that they were working to the service of the king and that they were living in an important administrative center close to the border with the Philistines”, affirms Gail regarding the inhabitants of the city. The assertion of which this place talks each other of Neta'im is because it is located close to the Vale Elah, identified like the Biblical people of Gederah.

At present Khirbet Qeiyafa contains ruins of an ancient fortitude in the top of a hill with sight to the Vale Elah. 3.000 years ago, nevertheless, there was blooming here a humble people of potters unraveled by the best historical source of the Christianity: the Bible.

The penguin of the Falklands that it dresses in mourning

I enter the blog and of a moment for other I turn into a garca, a fool, a traitor, a haughty one and a pedant.

Wow, with only one article that does not even treat the nature of my person as the Falklands changes to 100 %, and the respect and pluralism that I try to generate opening healthy discussions for the people who thinks for herself in more than 1300 articles that I have written here from 2007 transforms in a useless palabrerío, darkened therefore in fact I am: a secret agent of the British empire that wants to plant the Victorian flag on Buenos Aires and shout goals of the Manchester United.

Friendly readership and offended readership, now seriously: To continue this discussion does not reach port absolutely to the subject-matter of the blog, and neither it is necessary. Neither the aggressions affect me in the most minimal that I have received free and less still to hurt the sensitive one and hypermeasuring nationalism knife-edge - fascist of some, with borders Peronists, that if there is something that they do not have it is a comprehension and respect.

The only question that comes to my mind is: to someone more that Martín and Marcelo Vittoria is interested in the topic of this rarest and extraordinary penguin?

I write and re-write the rest of this comment, and realize that to keep on throwing firewood to the fire does not do any more that to worsen the question, since I always offend someone with what I say. Nothing more objective than to adhere to this thing that is called an INTERNATIONAL LAW to call to a country or region for his RECOGNIZED name INTERNATIONALLY. This was what I did with the Falkands, and when it named them I always think neither about the boys who fell down in this absurd war, nor about the that beast of surname Tchatcher, and less still, about the prostitute's children that were governing the Argentina because of it then. If it was doing it and was naming Malvinas for fear of not liking, he would be ignoring the history of what truly it spent, in that some of them win, others lose and others reflect on the implicit absurdity in the events, as it is the case of the history of these islands. To ignore the history belongs to cowards, or in his defect, a hobby for the madmen.

The life continued, and Argentina could not gain this war. Today the Malvinas neither exist nor are recognized. There exist the Falklands, the islands to which I refer in this article.

I give for my contribution completed in this post. Of course I will leave the comments book opened to give the welcome to any post that contributes something on the black penguins. The comments that think about how to keep on discussing territoriality questions, please send them to my personal pigeonhole (federico.castillo@abcblogs.com), basically because this post treats on penguins. Of course, do not wear out in sending to me free aggressions, because I do not think to answer them.

It waters down in the lunar rocks of the mission Apollo

it waters down in the moon

In 1971 the mission Apollo 15 was the center of attention of the NASA, and the astronauts David Scott and James Irwin, the ship, they gathered some samples of lunar rocks during his expedition. The NASA analyzed them each times to find some type of water evidence in the Moon, but the tests failed and it was decreed that the Moon was arid …

… until last year, when the water presence in the moon was confirmed officially. After it, the NASA decided to look backwards and analyze again the rocks of the mission Apollo 15 to see if the hardware with which the science is provided today, water tracks could meet in them. And this way it was. Last week there discussed the finds in the Spot and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) in Houston, Texas, and it does a pair of days they leaked out officially.

Small water molecules quantities can it was finding in rocks like the same as above, the brought ones by the mission of 1971, which appear in thousandth parts for million.

In the previous years it was impossible to detect so small water quantities in the rocks, but the NASA has obtained it with the modern analysis skills. “Only in the last decade we count it with sufficiently sensitive instruments as to analyze the water in this concentration”, tells Gary Lofgren, healer of the Spatial Center Johnson of the NASA.

The water find in the Moon stayed on forty years; if it should be carried out before insurance we would have been provided with at least the double of lunar spatial missions, give it made.

Is the porn right in us?

user4848_1175259612.jpg

The debate concerning the pornography is installed since it began to become porno in our society. Nowadays the industry moves millions and it is condemned for all the conservative sectors, which see it like a way to the crime, the misogyny and the degradation of the woman. Nevertheless, we all consume porn in major or minor measurement, and his presence is irrevocable.

The Scientist has decided to explore thoroughly the pornographic question and discover if the pornography affects on the valuations of crime and violations. The used evidence has not been completely exhaustive, but at least it proves sugerente to think that society might do good to us the porn as well as.

Michael Goldstein and Harold Kant have realized an investigation in which they analyzed the attitude of the rapists with regard to the pornography, with what they tried to knock down the myth of which this is a causal factor of violent sexual behavior and of crimes.

Both investigators interviewed some prisoners, discovered that there were more prisoners non-rapists who had been punished for look at pornography in his youth that the percentage of rapists in the same condition.

The conclusion of the investigators is that this reflects that the pornography is not associated straight with the incidence of sexual crimes, and that in fact it might serve like a channel to mitigate this criminal facet in the delinquents.

Obviously the study is quite basic and reduccionista, but it serves to make us think. Really does it serve the repression of the pornography? Our society works with her. As since it happens with the drug, there are realities that coexist with us and that we must accept and play with them like variables to improve like societies.

Telepathy with magnetic resonance

telepathy

To get into the brain of others has stopped being a thing of obscurantist sorcerers and gypsies tarotistas. The technology has raised the target in diverse opportunities, and it is in this occasion in which a team of investigators has passed much hit to obtain it using the excellent tool for it: the magnetic resonance.

Eleanor Maguire del University College of London experimented with ten volunteers whom he asked to look at videos of seven seconds in which one was showing to individuals realizing daily tasks. Then, analyzing his brains with magnetic resonances he asked them to remember them, getting deeply into the memory of the participants.

The study published in Current Biology, was focused in the observation of the activity in the sea horse, a region in the center of the brain that plays a fundamental role in the control and development of the memory and of the memories.

On having asked them to remember the videos that they saw, Maguire measured the cerebral activity of the volunteers with magnetic resonance, measuring the changes in the cerebral blood flow. The results had 50 % of effectiveness, enough more of the conceited thing, and opening this way the doors for an improving of the skill.

The possibility of a ‘Telepathic Machine’ sounds to a somewhat nineteenth-century idea; nevertheless, the possibility is real, and with his materialization the precision possibilities increase in the results of police cases and of criminology.

Insects photos after the electronic microscope

The world that hides after the lens of the microscope is fascinating, and I believe that we all have had the opportunity in some occasion to see what hides after him. We focus today on the insects, easily perceptible beings roughly I undress, but that after the lens of the electronic microscope (and with a little of color by means of) they acquire a surrealistic and supernatural aspect.

abeja1.jpg

The work of the British photographer Steve Gschmeissner is a good door towards this fantasy world to small scale. Using an electronic microscope Gschmeissner it has managed to receive insects images in high resolution, extended and in zoom that we share today.

Gschmeissner points with his work to spread the results of the use of this wonderful tool, which, on having cost a lot of money, cannot be enjoyed all over the world. The Telegraph spread another day a series with images of his work, which remains complete after keeping on reading.

The ISS crossing the sun

sol5.jpg

With the sun without solar points, like ours, the astronomers have a clearer visual field to explore the sun thoroughly and to be witnesses of what happens in him. The privilege is not exclusive of professional astronomers, and the photographers amateur also they can be a pleasure of extracting profit of it.

Leonardo Julio, photographer of Buenos Aires one was a pleasure of taking an exceptional picture of the sun that is published in Space Weather, which we can appreciate above (click to enlarge), and that shows to the International Space station (ISS) in his transit along the solar disc.

In July he reports that the ISS crossed the sun in only 0.5 seconds, and that it captured the image in a moment with his solar filter and his Canon EOS 40D. The product of the technology and the precision is this wonderful photo that costs as post of Sunday.

Animals in extinction: Computer graphics more than interesting

panda

Mother Nature Network is an interesting environmental portal with all kinds information with regard to extinct and animal species in extinction. In OjoCientífico this Sunday we dress ourselves of green once again and say again to him NOT to the fur coats rescuing an interesting MNN computer graphics.

The same one you can appreciate it under keeping on reading, and it costs of interesting information with regard to the state of the animals in extinction of our planet. We find here interesting information as that in Hawaii 71 species of extinct birds go from the arrival of the human beings to the island, which of 17 well-known penguins species 12 are in danger or which 3.200 tigers stay only in the world (the latter fact is really impressive).

Particularizing, we see that the United States is the country with more mollusks species, Colombia and Mexico with more amphibians, Indonesia with more mammals, Mexico with more reptiles and Brazil with more species of birds.
